// UPDATE FROM SANTA CRUZ

Brief update: after a few weeks of being hit with a fairly intense viral illness, I've started recovering & feeling a newfound appreciation for feeling energised again (it's amazing how much we can take our health for granted)

// ANNOUNCING EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION

Join the Fall Cohort of Nervous System Mastery

Five years ago, I launched Nervous System Mastery, my 5-week flagship program and in the years since, we've run nine cohorts — guiding over 1600 students — with this Fall marking our 10th cohort.

If you're curious about the cohort experience but not sure quite what to expect: take a look through these outcomes experienced by our previous students.

In terms of logistics, the cohort runs Oct 5th - Nov 6th, with a full schedule as follows:

  • Live Cohort Kick-off ~ Oct 5th @ 10am PT
  • Weekly Live Sessions w/ Jonny ~ Fridays @ 10am PT (from Oct 9th - Nov 6th)
  • Weekly Guest Masterclass sessions ~ 90 mins on Wednesdays
  • Weekly Relational Dojo ~ small group practice pods ~ multiple time options (more info during onboarding week)
  • Follow-up & Integration Call ~ Dec 4th @ 10am PT

You can see the full schedule, curriculum, guest speaker line-up, learning philosophy, and more on the info page here.

We're running an early-bird discount that gives $250 off enrollment, exclusively for Inner Frontier readers. Use the code EARLYBIRD at checkout.

Energy Security: The Missing Framework for Stress with Marek Doyle

What if stress is less about how busy your life looks and more about whether your body has enough energy to meet what is being asked of it?

I've worked with Marek Doyle personally, he's one of the world's leading experts on metabolic and nervous system health, and in this episode we unpack his novel framework of “energy security”: the relationship between the resources available to the body and the demands it expects to face.

We explore why a healing protocol can work beautifully for one person and do nothing for another, why improving energy availability can briefly make someone feel worse, and counter-intuitively, why a high HRV score is not automatically a sign of resilience.

Energy security is the missing framework when it comes to nervous system recovery
— Marek Doyle

The conversation also covers embodied safety, secondary stress, metabolic dysfunction, breathwork and how to run more useful self-experiments without blindly chasing a number.

You can expect to learn:

  • Why Marek became interested in people who did not respond to supposedly reliable health protocols
  • Why coming out of freeze can initially feel like increased anxiety or activation
  • Why a high HRV reading can sometimes be misinterpreted
  • How safety, prediction, parts work, and phobias shape protective responses
  • Why “anxiety about anxiety” can magnify the original stressor
  • How chronic stress and metabolic dysfunction can reinforce one another
  • Why rest, breathwork and somatic practices do not land the same way for every nervous system
  • How to think in principles and experiments instead of universal protocols

Somatic Surfing (guided audio)

An exercise that helps you build resilience through a gentle somatic (physical) exploration of challenging emotions.

Why: Building your capacity to stay present with challenging emotions develops your emotional fluidity and prevents emotional debt.

How:

  1. Find a quiet, safe space where you won’t be interrupted.
  2. Choose an emotion/memory of low intensity (3/10 max).
  3. Acknowledge the emotion. Locate any sensation you feel and explore its qualities: Texture (rough, smooth), Temperature (hot, cold, neutral), Movement (pulsing, static, wavelike)
  4. "Walk into” the center of the sensation. Stay present with it, breathe and observe changes. Ask gently: “What does this part want/need?” Allow any natural release (sighs, tears, movement, sound)
  5. If your awareness drifts to a story/thoughts, gently guide it back to physical sensation until you feel a sense of natural completion.

Tip: Like learning to surf, start with "small waves" (mild emotions) before building to more intense ones. Many find soft instrumental music helpful for maintaining presence. Remember: most emotional waves, when fully felt, last only 10-20 seconds.

Anger Cheat Sheet: I've found that unexpressed anger can often be at the root of depression or lethargy. But there are a lot of myths and confusion around how to practically go about expressing, so I put together this anger cheat sheet. Explore.

Assessment: The Lightwork team did a 4hr at home assessment: covering air + water quality, mold, EMFs, lighting & household products (turns out I was being blasted by EMFs) and I highly recommend them to anyone looking to create a default healthy home environment. Free Consult.

Listen: The Atlantic’s recent experiment in reclaiming a fragmented attention span is a fascinating look at what happens when we interrupt habitual scrolling and give our attention more room to expand. Listen.

Watch: A delightful film project from Goodbye Monkey, who are bringing to life what it means to blend nature and tech in this beautiful symbiosis. Watch.

// UPDATE FROM SANTA CRUZ Well, that was an exciting week... The How to Unclench essay received over a million views on twitter/X, I find it somewhat re-assuring that people still have the attention span to read a 30 minute essay. Or as my friend Rob Hardy likes to say: "The people they yearn for depth." I'm heading off-grid for a few days to recharge in nature, see you on the other side. Roughly a year ago I shared this post on X about unclenching that went viral and was seen by 1.8 million people. So it seemed like there was something here that was resonating. The more that I dug into the concept of 'unclenching' the more that it seemed to unify many disparate threads: from regulation tools, to deep meditation techniques and also seemed less abstract than talking about 'nervous system work'. So after many months of wrestling with the writing process, and receiving generous...
